YAY! DIY Plastic Canvas Cake Topper! Do you remember plastic canvas? Maybe your grandma once upon a time stitched with it? You definitely remember the plastic canvas tissue box holders, that your grandmother had in her bathroom though! Well this cute little cake topper is made from the same thing, and can be stitched to say whatever you like! If you’re worried about your cross-stitching skills, have no fear. Stitching up a cute cake topper is as easy as moving a needle in and out/up and down. If I can do it with my limited sewing skills, than you can too!
Supplies Needed
⁃Plastic Canvas
⁃Yarn
⁃Needle
⁃Scissors
⁃Skewers
⁃Hot Glue Gun
+ Step One +
Cut the plastic canvas letters. I used a sharpie to map out my letters first, then I cut them out with scissors. You can make your letters however BIG or small you want. I made mine about three inches tall.
+ Step Two +
Begin stitching the letters. I stitched from corner to corner of the little squares, working my way up. To give the letters a finished look, I watched a YouTube video of a whip stitch, and finished it up using that that. A whip stitch is basically moving your needle in and out of the little squares, working your way around the perimeter of the plastic canvas.
+ Step Three +
To attach the letters to the skewers, I used my handy dandy hot glue gun, and applied a small dab of hot glue to the back of the letters and the skewers. Let the glue dry and VIOLA! They are ready to stick into a delicious cake.
I love how personal and unique these can be made for any special occasion. I also thought it would be cute to make these letters into tags for gifts. Instead of snipping the yarn off at the end of your whip stitch, leave it. That way you can attach it to a gift, for a simple and cute personal touch!
Happy stitching!
